Tom Smith, le chanteur emblématique de Editors, s’apprête à écrire un nouveau chapitre de sa carrière avec une série de concerts intimistes en solo. Fort de plus de vingt ans de succès avec son groupe, il présente désormais des versions réinventées du catalogue d’Editors tout en révélant ses nouvelles compositions sous un angle plus épuré et personnel.
Son premier single en solo, Lights of New York City (sorti en juin 2025), marque le début d’une aventure introspective : « J’ai toujours eu l’appel d’écrire et de chanter des chansons tristes », confie-t-il. Cette tournée, qui passera notamment par l’Irlande (Galway, Cork, Limerick, Kilkenny, Derry), proposera également deux représentations spéciales et intimes à l’église Notre-Dame de Laeken, un cadre unique pour découvrir toute la sensibilité et la puissance vocale de l’artiste.

Als magnetische frontman van Editors heeft Tom Smith in België natuurlijk geen introductie meer nodig. De Britse band sluit steevast de grote festivals af en speelt in de grootste arena’s. Naast de stuwende postpunk-sound van de groep is het songschrijverschap én de meteen herkenbare, diepe stem van de frontman een belangrijke factor.
Vanuit de nood om terug te keren naar de kern van zijn muziek werkte Smith aan een soloplaat. Net zoals bij Editors vertrok hij van akoestische gitaar en piano, maar dit keer hield hij het eindresultaat bewust eenvoudig. Of zoals hij zelf zegt:
“Artistically I realised I wanted to do something which was a purer representation of the songs I write, in the style I always have, on an acoustic guitar or a piano, presented simply. I’ve got no idea if it’s folky, country’y, crooner’y or what really, I’ve just always had the calling to write and sing sad songs. More often than not those songs grow with the band (Editors) into something else, something bigger, and often something more confrontational, but with this solo project I wanted the recordings to stay simpler and closer to the ideas they were when I conceived them.”
De eerste track, ‘Lights of New York City’, toont meteen de richting van het album aan, dat Tom Smith afwerkte samen met de Ierse singer-songwriter Iain Archer.
Met zijn eerste soloalbum tourt Smith in een stripped-down bezetting langs bijzondere locaties en kerken, waar hij zowel solowerk als intieme versies van Editors-nummers zal spelen. Het wordt een unieke kans om de zanger in een bijzondere setting aan het werk te zien.
